Anti-cellulite leggings: what consumer tests and studies really say

Short answer: as far as we know, no consumer magazine has tested anti-cellulite leggings. In the US, the FTC and the advertising watchdog NAD found slimming and anti-cellulite claims for shapewear and leggings unsupported. Studies on compression garments show a modest, short-lived smoothing effect, not cellulite disappearing. Here is what regulators and studies really say, with sources.

We sell anti-cellulite leggings, so it makes sense to check what we write here: every key claim links to its source.

The short answer

As far as we know, as of 13 October 2026, Consumer Reports has not published a test of anti-cellulite leggings, nor of anti-cellulite creams or slimming garments. What does exist in the US is action against the claims: in 2014 the Federal Trade Commission settled with two sellers of caffeine-infused shapewear, and in 2011 the advertising industry's watchdog asked a brand of "anti-cellulite" leggings to drop its performance claims. If a brand says its legging was "tested by a consumer magazine", ask for the issue number.

If a consumer organization publishes a test of anti-cellulite leggings, that is the first source to read.

What dermatologists say about cellulite products

Without a consumer test, the closest neutral US source we found is the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD). It is a professional body of dermatologists, not a consumer group, and its page "Cellulite treatments: What really works?" is an expert opinion, not a test.

Three points from that page are worth remembering:

  • Some creams may have an effect. Caffeine can dehydrate cells and make cellulite less visible, provided you apply it every day.
  • A 0.3% retinol may also help, but it takes about 6 months to judge.
  • Endermologie, a mechanical massage, gives variable and temporary results: cellulite usually comes back within a month of stopping.

The page does not mention garments.

Which anti-cellulite leggings work best according to tests?

We have not found any independent test that would let us say so today. Looking for a consumer magazine's verdict is still the right instinct: anti-cellulite leggings are sold with strong promises, and a neutral opinion is worth more than a product page. Without such a test, three independent sources exist: the federal consumer protection agency, the advertising industry's watchdog and scientific studies.

What regulators and advertising watchdogs say

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) settled with two companies on 29 September 2014 over caffeine-infused shapewear: Norm Thompson (Lytess fabrics) and Wacoal (iPants). Their claims were that the garments reduced cellulite and the size of the thighs or hips, and destroyed fat cells. According to the FTC, these claims were false or not backed by scientific evidence. The two companies paid more than 1.5 million dollars in refunds to customers, and the orders bar them from claiming that a garment containing a drug or cosmetic causes substantial weight or fat loss.

The National Advertising Division (NAD) of BBB National Programs is the US advertising industry's self-regulatory body. In a decision of 14 November 2011, it reviewed the claims made for Bliss World's "Turbocell" anti-cellulite leggings: "ditch dimples and lose inches", dimples reduced by 19.05%, up to 2 inches lost, "no exercise required". The two studies supplied, from 1982 and 2001, were judged insufficient. NAD recommended dropping all performance claims and sticking to the construction and fabric of the leggings. We hold our own articles to the same caution: no lost inches, no vanishing cellulite, only what a garment does while you wear it.

What studies say about garments and cellulite

Studies exist, but they are few and small.

Study What was tested What was observed Limitations
Bagatin et al., 2013 Compression tights worn by 30 women Slight effect on the look of cellulite, better quality of life No group without compression
Kiely et al., 2023 Compression garment worn for 4 weeks by 18 women Higher satisfaction, slightly less water under the skin, weight unchanged No control group, link with the manufacturer
Luebberding et al., 2015 Review of 67 studies on all treatments No clear evidence of good efficacy, whatever the treatment Few studies look at garments

What comes up from one study to the next: a modest, short-lived smoothing effect, and women who feel more comfortable in their bodies. No study shows weight loss or cellulite disappearing. And no independent study has yet been published on 3D-knit leggings without active ingredients, like ours.

How to judge an anti-cellulite legging without an official test

Until you find an independent test, here are the questions to ask any brand, ours included:

  • What exactly does it promise? "Smooths the look of the skin while worn" is honest. "Melts cellulite away" or "-3 cm in 15 days" is not, unless there is published evidence.
  • Which technology? A textured knit that massages and holds, graduated compression, or microcapsules of active ingredients that wear off over the washes. These are not the same products.
  • Which sizes? A legging that is too tight is uncomfortable and counterproductive. Check the size guide and the range on offer.
  • Which reviews, and where? A rating on an independent platform such as Trustpilot, with the number of reviews and the negative reviews visible, is worth more than stars on the product page.
  • What are the return conditions? How long you have, and who pays for the return.

To read anti-cellulite leggings reviews with these criteria in mind, we compared seven brands in our comparison of anti-cellulite leggings. And we explain what a legging can and cannot do in do anti-cellulite leggings work?

Our 3D legging relies on a textured knit that gently massages the skin with every movement, light compression and a shaping effect, from S to 5XL. It smooths the look of the skin while you wear it and makes your legs feel lighter. It does not make cellulite disappear.

Frequently asked questions

Has any consumer magazine tested anti-cellulite leggings?

Not as far as we know. As of 13 October 2026, we found no Consumer Reports test of anti-cellulite leggings, creams or slimming garments. In the US, the closest thing to an independent verdict comes from the FTC, which settled with two sellers of caffeine-infused shapewear in 2014, and from the NAD, which asked a brand to drop its performance claims for anti-cellulite leggings in 2011.

Do anti-cellulite leggings work according to tests?

As far as we know, no consumer magazine has published a test of them to date. The few scientific studies, on 18 to 30 women, show a modest, short-lived smoothing effect and greater satisfaction. None shows cellulite disappearing or weight loss.

What do doctors think of anti-cellulite leggings?

Reviews of the medical literature (Luebberding et al. 2015, Gabriel et al. 2023) conclude that no cellulite treatment has clearly demonstrated efficacy, garments included, and that the improvements observed are short-lived. A legging can improve comfort and how your legs look. It is not a treatment.

How long do you need to wear an anti-cellulite legging to see an effect?

The shaping effect shows as soon as you put it on, since the legging holds the tissue, and it does not last once you take it off. Studies followed women for about 4 weeks of daily wear and saw only modest changes. Be wary of promises of measurable results in a few days.

What is the difference between graduated compression and 3D knit?

Graduated compression is tighter at the ankle than at the thigh to help blood flow back up the veins, like a compression stocking. 3D knit is a textured knit that gently massages the skin with every movement and visually smooths the silhouette, with softer compression. The first is mainly for heavy legs, the second for comfort and appearance.

Do anti-cellulite leggings help you lose weight?

No. No study shows weight loss with a legging, and the FTC has acted against shapewear sold with slimming claims. It can make your silhouette look slimmer while you wear it by holding the tissue, which is a visual effect.

How do you spot a good-quality anti-cellulite legging?

Look for measured, verifiable promises, clearly explained technology, a wide size range with an accurate size guide, reviews on an independent platform with the negative reviews visible, and clear return conditions. Also check in the reviews whether it keeps its shape after repeated washing.

In short

As far as we know, no consumer magazine has tested anti-cellulite leggings. In the US, the FTC and the NAD found slimming and anti-cellulite claims for shapewear and leggings unsupported. Studies on garments show a modest, short-lived smoothing effect and women who feel more at ease, nothing more. A good anti-cellulite legging is therefore a comfortable garment that improves how your legs look, not a treatment. Choose it on criteria you can check.
